As part of preparations for their important AFCON qualifier against South Africa the Super Eagles played two warm up games against Corsica and Togo. It was an Avenue for Gernot Rohr to try out a slew of untested players. The friendlies were largely seen as a success however they have thrown up a fresh set of questions that beg answers
1. Do we still have a fullback crisis?
Our search for quality fullbacks have been well documented with coach Rohr scouring the globe for quality players who can play at either right or left back. However we didn’t seem to come up short in those departments in the freindlies. Echiejile seemed assured and capable and Shehu held his own at right keeping Rohrs newbie Ebuehi on the bench. With Ola Aina about to become an option and Maarouf Youssef recruited to back up at left back have we sorted out our problem ?
2. Has Ahmed Musa silenced his critics?
Ahmed Musa has come in for severe criticism from Super Eagles fans with several calling for him to be dropped. His poor season at Leicester plus issues off the pitch hasn’t helped his case. However the 24 year old showed he can still deliver in the green white green. Is his gutsy performance and 2 goals enough to silence his critics ?
3. Have we found our defensive backup in Awaziem?
The young 20 year old Porto defence earned high praise for his part in the 2 eagles friendlies and formed a promising partnership with Troost-Ekong. Our options at centre back are short. Can we start regarding Awaziem as backup good enough to stop us worrying about Leon Baloguns incessant injuries?
4. Is Isaac Success Eagles career at risk?
Though pronounced injured the truth is: Isaac Success was absent yet again from the Eagles get together. With so much talent coming into the team especially in the attack and on the wings is there a possibility the immensely talented Success might stop being considered all together?
5. Why did it take us this long to cap Mike Agu
The Victoria Setubal midfielder was the revelation from the 2 games the eagles played. With eye catching performances both against Corsica and Togo the year old seems to have forced his way into the team and is being tipped to challenge Onazi. Why did it take so long to invite the player in the 1st place ?
6. Will Rohr stick to playing Iwobi on the wings
Alex Iwobi dazzled against Togo and was even adjudged MOTM in some quarters. While he claims his best position is in the centre he seems to excel on the flanks for the Eagles. Despite the presence of “more natural wingers” do we stick with Iwobi on the flanks?
7. Have we seen the last of the China based Strikers
One thing is clear about Gernot Rohr he is a firm believer of youth. Rohr needed an extra striker for the team and at some point considered one of the China based Eagles in Odion Ighalo or Brown Ideye but latter opted for his younger options. With his evident trust in Iheanacho and Osimhen and the un-ignorable numbers of Kayode and Onyekuru does this mark the end of the road for the strikers based in China?
