Top Belgian side RSC Anderlecht have hit back at Henry Onyekuru after the Nigerian striker accused them of deliberately stalling his Everton career.
Onyekuru accused Anderlecht and coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck of not selecting him in order to reduce his chances of selection for the World Cup – which would aid his chances of getting a work permit to play for Everton.
The 20 year old Nigerian was signed by Everton last summer and was immediately loaned him to the Belgium side for the season where he scored nine goals in 25 appearances
However his remarkable season was cut short after he sustained a serious knee injury in December that required surgery
It was initially thought he would be out of the rest of the season but he made a remarkable recovery and declared himself fit to play before the campaign was done.
Onyekuru needed to play so as to be selected by the Nigerian national team handlers for the world cup but unfortunately was not featured again by Anderlecht till the end of the season
“Anderlecht knew that I needed the 2018 FIFA World Cup to get a work permit for England. By not making me play, the chances of going to Russia were nil. So, I could not go to the Premier League. An obviously angry Onyekuru is quoted as saying in HLN
“Maybe that is how Anderlecht hopes to keep me for another year. A ridiculous reasoning – I can go anywhere. It is now certain that I will not stay. I will go abroad. Somewhere I get respect.”
Howwver the club has now come out to deny the accusations with a statement from a spokesman to the Echo
“Henry is a great player and his injury in December weakened the squad and reduced the chances to participate to the World Cup with his country,” the statement read
“RSC Anderlecht, nor the technical staff never made any promise to Henry concerning his selection.
“RSCA is a professional club and it wouldn’t be very professional to make promises to players.
“The coach selects the best and fittest players for the games.”
Anderlecht sporting director Luc Devroe also confirmed to HNL that Onyekuru will not be with Anderlecth next season but will either spend next season with Everton or with another club on loan
