Nigerian Professional Football League defending champions Enyimba title defence was left in tatters after they lost to Ikorodu United on Wednesday at the M.K.O Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta in a five-goal thriller
With the loss, Seven-time champions Enyimba remain in seventh place on 49 points after 33 games.
This means the hopes of Enyimba playing international football next year via the league is virtually up in smoke and they will have to win the Federation Cup to achieve this.
Ikorodu United who are virtually condemned to go down on relegation put up another impressive display beating Enyimba 3-2 in the thrilling rescheduled NPFL game.
The Lagos club scored the opening goal in the 28th minute through Fatai Abdullahi, but Enyimba drew level four minutes later, when Mfon Udoh scored from the penalty spot.
Goalkeeper Adamu Azeez fouled goal-bound Musa Najare to give a Enyimba an easy route to draw level.
Ikorodu United were back in front when Oluwole Johnson fired past Theophilus Afelokhai in goal for Enyimba in the 53rd minute
The Peoples’ Elephant however clawed their way back into the game through Najare who made it 2-2 in the 61st minute
But in the 68th minute substitute for Ikorodu United Michael Okoyoh delivered the nail in the coffin against his former club with a clinical finish.
Ikorodu United however remain rooted at the bottom of the NPFL log with 32 points from 33 matches in spite of the recent impressive wins against Heartland, Pillars and Enyimba.
