Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has recounted the Nigerian teams meeting with Liberian President and footballing Icon George Weah and how the match came about
The Super Eagles tactician also recounted the events that led to the two teams deciding to play the novelty game in honor of the Liberian legend
Nigeria won the game played at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium 2-1 courtesy of goals from Henry Onyekuru and Simeone Nwankwo
“We are only informed about the match maybe five or six days before only. Rohr is quoted as saying on Girondins for ever
“The Nigerian government wanted a political rapprochement with Liberia.”
“So after we took on Seychelles, where we played on Saturday, winning 3-0, the team then traveled through Dubai, Lagos and we arrived in Monrovia on Monday around 13 hours, after thirty hours of travel .”
“Then an hour of bus drive before going to the residence of Weah, where the team was very well received, but we shortened a little visit because we were tired”
The two men also remembered common memories shared from when Weah played against Girondis Bordeaux where Rohr was a coach at the time
“There was a beautiful atmosphere, many people, c was super nice”. Rohr said
And Weah reminded me that he had broken his hand against Bordeaux, that I was coaching then, on a contact, involuntary I think, with ‘Liza’ (Lizarazu).
He had played the whole match (Girondins – AC Milan, 3-0, March 19, 1996, in the UEFA Cup) like that and in one last action, he had even fallen back.
